Drag queens as political organizers? Obviously, honey.

We have so much to catch up on.
How was your Halloween?
Can we help you cope with Election Day stress?
Are you ready for BWC’s monthly newsletter?
Take Action:
Data centers aren’t popular, but Big Tech keeps building them and causing harm. Let’s fight back.
The NAACP Stop Dirty Data Centers campaign is full of action items, including voter resources for Tuesday’s election.
Your organization can join the Stop Data Centers Coalition.

We’re working on:
We filmed a BUNCH of content about civil rights in Montana.
We flew out to the Big Sky State and led a week of content creation with ACLU Montana.
We’ve already started rolling out content from the trip — and that’s just the beginning.
We recorded interviews about voting rights, trans rights, Indigenous rights, and more. We’ve even got a cooking tutorial in the works…keep an eye out!

Trans youth in Missouri might lose access to gender-affirming care. Our partners are on the ground, fighting this transphobia.
We helped develop a toolkit that guides trans folks and allies through tough conversations about trans people. We want these conversations to leave everyone with more understanding, empathy, and support.
Door knockers in Missouri are using that toolkit’s techniques to reach people before the midterm elections. Their work was featured in KFF Health News.
We led a training with trans rights advocates in Louisiana.
Alongside the Equality Federation Institute, we led a kick-off session for Louisiana Trans Advocates’ TRANSFORM Cohort, a two-year program to build trans leadership capacity across Louisiana.
We discussed how to craft and share personal stories for advocacy work. We can’t wait to see what the cohort does throughout their program!
Intersex people chronicle their “movement's ongoing fight to end state-sanctioned medical violence.”
One of our collaborators is helping to build a free digital museum to show how intersex people have fought for their rights for the past 30 years.

Movement in the Media
Drag performers dress up to vote down the ballot.
I’m feeling inspired by the Drag PAC and their digital strategy.
When working in communications to get out the vote — at least, for anything besides the presidential election — it can sometimes feel like your content is either 1) shouting into the void or 2) preaching to the choir. People don’t seem to be engaging in the content, or the people who do engage in the content are usually registered voters already.
Leave it to the drag artists to get creative in their outreach efforts.
They keep their advocacy funny, visually engaging, and earnest, but not corny. From what I can see, they’re likely reaching and empowering young and queer people who might otherwise be disillusioned by the political establishment. These artists remind us of our power in a colorful, community-first way.
Good luck at the ballot box tomorrow, diva!
That’s all for October. Thanks so much for reading.
